Habitat ECS | 'I wanted to do something better, but I didn’t know what better was'

Our day was supposed to start by heading to the local Care and Share, whose core purpose is to bridge the gap between hunger and abundance. Their mission is to provide food, partnering opportunities, and education to fight hunger in Southern Colorado. Every day they provide food to neighbors in need because they have one belief: No one should go hungry. However, we had originally planned to visit this organization earlier in the ECS, but due to a winter bomb cyclone, that fell through....

Habitat ECS | Working at the ReStore

Today we started out by talking about the organizations we would be helping. We were going to work at the ReStore, which gets its stock from donors who give them household appliances, furniture, and other things they no longer use. The ReStore then sells these things for a fraction of the price of new items. This helps those with low income budgets afford things they might need. When we arrived at the ReStore we watched videos about safety, equipment, and how much of a difference even one...

Habitat ECS | Helping Build a House

Today, our last week of the ECS began. The five members of the ECS who were 16 and older visited an organization called Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for humanity is an organization, which builds stability for families in need through affordable housing. The service of volunteers, like us, enables the cost of each home to be affordable for a deserving family. The family should be able to pay the rent for the house and should have a job.The goal of Habitat and humanity is to build low cost...

Unfortunately, our speaker had to cancel due to the aftermath of the blizzard on Wednesday. Habitat ECS | Learning About the Complex Issue From Different Sides

Having learned about the struggles of being homeless in days past, today we learned more about the perspective of the people who interact with homeless people to better our community. We went to the police station and received a presentation from police officers. However, it was clear these officers were not what you typically thought of when you think about the police, as their uniforms were much different. This was because they were part of the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), and their main...

Habitat ECS | In the Footsteps of Homelessness

Today our group went on the Urban Experience. The Urban Experience is led by the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission to help people learn about the daily hardships the homeless population has to go through just to make it every day. For example, a person has to get to an interview at 9 a.m. for a potential job. They wake up early at a shelter or anywhere where they are staying to walk to the showers at the ESM, the Ecumenical Social Ministries, where they provide food, medicine, and the...
